“The Show Must Go On” Is About Community and Community Theater
“The Show Must Go On” is both a sendup and a celebration of community theater. Amanda, a small-town’s rebel, is determined that this year’s annual play production will be different: She will direct a dark, modern drama written by a revolutionary German playwright. Mrs. Pauley, the town’s grande dame, is just as determined to convince Amanda to present another light comedy from the past. Amanda appears to win out but has to go to extraordinary lengths to cast the play when no one shows up for the audition. She also has to get permission from the playwright to produce his play and enlists a drifter, who is smitten with her, to write a misleading letter that suggests to the playwright that this community theater is avant-garde enough to perform his play. The letter succeeds all too well: The playwright grants permission and arrives to assist in the production, much to Amanda’s dismay, Mrs. Pauley’s delight and the drifter’s jealousy. Will the show go on? There’s only one way to find out.
