Photos by Louise Shannon-Martin/For the Closeup As a blue curtain came up, the crowd cheered. The endeavor of a few had come to fruition — their dream of hosting a major public art display was now a reality “I am
so excited!” beamed project co-chairman Rebecca Rice as she watched the
reactions of the onlookers The Tybee Turtle Tour will play host to [50] large “whimsical wonders” placed all around the island. “Turtle Visions” kicked off the event with its depiction of a typical seascape. It was artfully painted by Tybee artist Sally Bostwick. “Turtle Visions” will be on display in front of City Hall for the duration of the tour, which is to end by [Fall ‘07]when the creations will be auctioned off and proceeds will go, in part, to turtle research and Tybee’s businesses that experience lean times during the tourist off-season. Artists from as far as Indiana and Kentucky were on hand to see “Turtle Visions” unveiled. Artists far and wide have been invited to share their ideas for future turtles. For public view, dozens of drawings and model prototypes were on display in City Hall’s main room, on the tables full of delectable hors d’oeuvres. If an artist’s prototype is chosen, the person will be commissioned to do the giant rendition that is roughly about four by five feet in width and height. For more information about the tour, visit the Web site at www.tybeeturtletour.org or call Rebecca Rice at 786-0617. |
